Bar exams are among the most demanding professional examinations in Slovakia. They test not only legal knowledge, but above all the ability to think in context, build arguments and find solutions in situations that often have no straightforward answer in practice.
Our colleague Patrik Balázs successfully passed the bar exams after completing his entire three-year trainee practice at BDO Legal. And it is precisely the combination of intensive hands-on experience, work on real cases and everyday interaction with clients that, in our view, forms the true foundation of a strong legal professional.
During his time at BDO Legal, Patrik worked across a broad range of legal areas — from commercial transactions and contractual documentation to corporate structures, tax-related legal matters and dispute resolution. This type of environment naturally connects different areas of law and prepares young lawyers for the reality of legal practice far more effectively than isolated specialization.
The bar exams before the Slovak Bar Association are built on this same complexity. They consist of both written and oral parts and cover the full spectrum of Slovak law — civil, commercial, criminal and administrative law, civil procedure, constitutional law, EU law, legal ethics and professional regulations.
Three years at BDO Legal taught me that law is about solutions, not just regulations.
Sitting in front of the examination board, I realized that most of the topics they asked about were things I had already encountered in real practice. That was probably the best feeling of all.
The exams are not merely a test of memorizing legal provisions. They are a test of legal reasoning, the ability to connect concepts and defend decisions under pressure.
